There are some things that we find difficult to fix our mind on, like meditation! In others we quite easily become absorbed. Some thoughts will lift, comfort and heal. Others will only bring anxiety and pain. It would seem it should be a simple matter to recognize what will lift us and what will bring us down, and simply choose the former.
But the mind is quite willing to play endless reruns of a painful event in the past, or play out a dreadful fictitious scene from the future, over and over. It takes conscious guidance of the mind to engage it in positive contemplation.
Fortunately, music, poetry, uplifting books and nature are all easy to become absorbed in—and each can be a refuge of joy and healing. |
