We live within the sphere of our own minds and the even smaller sphere of our own desires and fears. In meditation we see quickly and clearly that we are not in control of our thoughts. Desires and fears pull us this way and that without mercy. It seems there is little we can do to hold our thoughts on a single object of concentration. Gradually, as the mind begins to accept direction and slows down, we see our desires and fears appear and drop away as we soar into the calm space of still consciousness.
We have no idea of the burden we carry until it begins to fall away even a little.
It is not that our desires and life are bad. The whole of our life's possessions are not bad, but we might not necessarily want to carry them on our back all the time.
