It is a great gift to be able to a thing well. It is a greater gift to know you are the instrument and not the doer. The highest human expression only takes place when all sense of self has dissolved into the flow of the expression itself. A great painter is lost in the current of the creation taking place, and a great musician disappears into the music flowing through.
The sense of "self", the ego, may well re-emerge when the painting is finished or the music has ended, but during the pouring out of creativity, the artist approaches the realm of still consciousness. In this state the he or she is simply an instrument, and fortunate be so.
