before the gray winters sleep
Yellows, greens and golds,
orange and flaming reds
All aglow upon the earth waters
and splashed upon the sky
It is the first frost that sets the leaves ablaze. Reflected in lakes and ponds, the landscape looks like twin paintings mirroring each other. A final exuberant display of the life-force that will soon slumber through the long night of winter's icy reign.
