Only when our thoughts are a burden, when they are painful or uncomfortable, do we notice how difficult to control and persistent they can be! As long as our thoughts are pleasurable or at least tolerable, we rarely notice that they are in control. We are also largely unaware that our thoughts, even enjoyable ones, obscure a greater joy and peace that only emerges in silence.
When we have become weary of difficult, disturbing or painful thoughts we may begin to desire quietness of mind. Then we find that acquiring a calm mind is an accomplishment equivalent to the feat of a great athlete. With determination and perseverance we can learn to access silence and know the comfort and joy we long for.
