The calling out from deep within in time of need is spontaneous. We may have no idea where it comes from or where it goes, or if there is any consciousness that actually hears our inner cry. For some, this inner cry is a deliberate prayer, for others it is an involuntary act of desperation.
Whether we call it "prayer" or not is irrelevant, but science has shown that this expression has an effect. Reaching deep to call on a power somehow greater than ourselves does something whether we consider ourselves religious, spiritual or neither. It also takes us into our center where we may experience the healing comfort of "serene emptiness" in the midst of trial and misfortune.
