In meditation, if we repeat our mantra slowly with our breathing-in and breathing-out, thoughts in our mind gradually recede into the background. Not because we have pushed them away but because our focus has been redirected to the simple repetition of the mantra. They have begun to fade away of themselves for lack of attention. What arises in their place is the surprise of peace, clear and light as an ocean breeze.
It is a long process to reach a point where the mind is as clear as a flawless sky, perhaps the quest of lifetimes. But along the way, on the path to stillness we find deeper peace and ever greater light.
