It may seem counter-intuitive to view the dissolution of "self" as the gateway to joy and bliss. But it is an epiphany when we first see that the self we are hoping to fulfill—can never be whole. What we think of as "me" is a fragment of the whole and can only be fulfilled by re-uniting. It is as though we are standing outside a wall surrounding a city, and on the other side of the wall is all that we love.
The wall is our false sense of self. We are afraid to let go of our identity, but that is what we must do if we are ever to know who we really are. We won't lose anything. Not much will change. We will simply know that we are not our thoughts, the things we do, the things we have or have lost. We are something much larger, and we shine much brighter than, the little flame we now call "me."
