Isn’t it astonishingly true that even though we know rationally that everyone eventually dies, we somehow don’t really believe it will happen to us? Something inside thinks it will live forever. This is both self-deceit and ultimately true. These bodies we identify with will all die, so it is self-deceit to think that we will not someday experience the death of the body.
In a deeper sense, the feeling that we will never die is actually the Truth, but that which will live forever is neither the body nor the mind. Not being clear about this, we often spend our mortal days chasing desires that offer temporary satisfaction at best, and often actually shorten the brief time we have in this mysterious realm of human existence.
