In depths of meditation boundaries of "self" dissolve as the mind lets go of the ceaseless construction of our mistaken identity! The sense of ourself as a separate being is completely a construction of the mind. In a desperate effort to answer the question, "Who am I?" the mind identifies with memories, accomplishments, failures, physical attributes, talents, race, ethnicity, religion and on and on.
Inevitably, we still feel that something is missing, that we are not quite whole, so we try to fill that empty space with something more. We can be psychologically "whole" within ourselves, healthy and well-integrated, but to be truly whole spiritually is to experience pure consciousness without thoughts.
It is thoughts that form the walls of our sense of separation. No thoughts—no separation!
