Calming the mind is not only an essential part of the spiritual path; it is also a very practical skill to acquire. To calm the mind requires that we exercise some degree of control over our thoughts and hold the focus of our attention on whatever we choose.
This helps us to do everything better, more efficiently and with greater concentration. A peaceful mind reduces negative emotions that can become quite uncontrollable when given free rein.
When we have gained sufficient control of our mind to step back and witness our thoughts, we acquire the power of detachment. This allows us to see negative feelings in the distance even as they begin to form. Then, with practice, we have the opportunity to dismiss them before they take possession of our mind and actions.
